A “time out” signal can help your dog to relax as he knows that nothing will happen in this time. He won’t be missing out on anything and all attempts to get your attention are a waste of energy and will therefore stop after a while. To make it easy for your dog and family members to understand when the “time out” starts, place an object out of reach but within sight for the dog. The object has to be something that he usually doesn’t get to see. After the time out put the object away and treat your dog as usual. After a few repetitions it will understand the meaning. You can also combine it with a verbal signal. This can be very useful for demanding and hyper dogs after plenty of exercise has been provided.
